Tattoos are fully healed in about 3-4 weeks. It is important that during that time, we follow proper measures to ensure they heal properly.

Basic Aftercare:

  • After your tattoo session, leave the provided wrapping on for no more than 4 hours.

  • Once the wrapping is removed, you will start your routine of washing the tattoo twice a day with anti-bacterial, unscented soap and a light, unscented lotion. Unscented is necessary for aftercare products, as scented products have alcohols and other chemicals that can cause issues during healing.

  • Using your clean hands, wash the tattoo with anti-bacterial, unscented soap, and pat dry with paper towels. Then, using your clean hands, apply a thin layer of light, unscented lotion. Let the tattoo breathe and do not rewrap it.

  • You can shower like normal, however I recommend washing the tattoo last in your routine, as to ensure there are no other products irritating the tattoo.

  • As the tattoo heals, it will dry out, solidify over, and start to peel. DO NOT PICK AT IT. That layer will come off naturally over the next few weeks. It may get itchy, DO NOT SCRATCH AT IT. You can reapply light, unscented lotion using clean hands to relieve itchiness.

DO NOT:

  • Submerge your fresh tattoo in water. NO swimming or baths.

  • Pick at or scratch your healing tattoo. Let the healing bits fall off naturally.

  • Expose your healing tattoo to direct sunlight. Sunscreen can be worn on the tattoo once it is healed.

  • Wash your healing tattoo with exfoliants, loofahs, washcloths, or scrubbing brushes.

  • Wear tight clothing/accessories (watches, bracelets, etc.) on your healing tattoo.

  • Let your pets near your fresh tattoo. Avoid exposing your tattoo to fur, saliva, or dander.

  • Overexert the tattooed area during exercise for the first few days of healing. Be careful with sweat and touching equipment.

  • Spray perfume on your healing tattoo.

Second Skin Aftercare:

  • I provide the option of an adhesive bandage (“second skin”) that can be left on up to 3-5 days.

  • If you have any prior history of irritation from adhesives such as bandages or medical tape, I will not use this product on you. If you were provided the adhesive bandage and experience any redness/irritation around it, remove it immediately.

  • The adhesive bandage will normally fill with blood, ink, and plasma, creating an “ink sack". DO NOT DRAIN IT, leave it alone. If it starts to leak or gets torn open, remove the bandage immediately. If fluids are leaking out, that breach creates an opportunity for possible contaminants to get trapped inside and lead to infection. If it is still secure and there is a build up of fluid, it usually dries up underneath on its own.

  • Whenever you choose to remove the second skin bandage, run it under warm water and peel in one consistent direction. The water will loosen the adhesive and make it easier to peel away. Taking the bandage off dry can be more painful, and can take off parts of the healing tattoo.

  • Once the adhesive bandage is off, you will follow the basic aftercare routine of anti-bacterial, unscented soap and light, unscented lotion up to twice a day. Do not rewrap the tattoo.
